HOUSTON, TEXAS, October 21, 2024 – Calaway Solutions, LLC, a subsidiary of American Infrastructure Group, Inc. (AIGI), has executed a new contract delivering critical wind turbine blade inspection services for a Fortune 500 utility company.   Calaway recently completed both internal blade inspections and external Lightning Protection System (LPS) inspections for this utility wind turbine owner, and is scheduled to perform additional assessments at multiple wind farms in coming weeks.

Internal blade inspections are performed using an Elios drone that is flown inside the length of the blade while capturing 4K video.  The video is provided to Wind Power Labs in Denmark, and they analyze the results and provide a report of any issues found inside each blade, risk rated from level 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest).

External LPS inspections are performed using a Voliro drone equipped with a sensor that presses against specific locations on each blade, then measures the electrical resistance to ground.  A high resistance to ground indicates that the LPS is not adequately protecting the blade from lightning strikes, whereas a low resistance to ground indicates that the LPS is working as designed.

“Performing blade assessments is a critical activity that mitigates both operational risks and financial risks for the wind turbine owner. Operational risks range from blades that don’t maintain their integrity and twist or bend more than designed, causing the turbine system to have a shorter useful life, to catastrophic failure in which a blade breaks loose from the turbine, shutting down that turbine, and potentially damaging nearby wind turbines, power lines, structures, or worse,” Jeff Myerson, Chief Operating Officer of AIGI Data Tech LLC said.   “Financial risks range from wind turbines that run inefficiently due to blade issues, reducing power output and reducing expected return on investment, to liability for damage to people or property of others if a blade breaks loose.”
